Emilie died “kicking and screaming” at age 41 on July 11th, 2023 due to metastatic colon cancer less than one year after diagnosis. Emilie thanks all the nurses, doctors, and support staff, especially Dr Sandhu and Dr Hodgson, with the great care she received at the Owen Sound Hospital and Chapman House.
Emilie was born in Toronto where she attended Bennington Heights, Presteign Heights, Cosbourne Middle School and Leaside High Schools. In Grade 11 her family moved to the Owen Sound area where she attended West Hill and graduated at the top of her class.
Emilie earned a B.Sc. in Geography at the University of Western Ontario, and then, craving some excitement, enrolled in Marine Geomatics and the Centre of Geographic Sciences in Nova Scotia. She loved her time there, and it was where she met her to be life-partner Jody. After graduation she was employed by Fugro Pelagos mapping coastal waterways using lasers from airplanes (LiDAR) around the world. Some of her favourites were the coastline of the USA up to Petersburg, Alaska, Australia, UAE, Guam, Marshall Islands, and American Samoa. During this time she was based out of Mississippi, until Hurricane Katrina devastated the community there. She then moved to Victoria BC to be with Jody, and then Thunder Bay. After a while living out of a suitcase loses its charm and she took a job in Edmonton in the oil and gas sector.
Emilie quickly realised oil and gas were not for her, and as Jody and Emilie were expecting their first child, they moved back to the Owen Sound area to be close to grandparents and a good community to raise children in. Emilie took time off work after both her daughter and son were born. Afterwards she found a new rewarding career path in accounting. After working up through accounting in various local businesses, she finally landed at the Owen Sound Police Services as a Financial Coordinator. She really loved the job and was heartbroken to have to go on sick leave after only a year there.
Emilie loved to spend time out in nature, enjoyed knitting, and sewing beautiful creations. She played the piano beautifully and was a fierce runner.
Emilie will be sadly missed and long remembered by her two beloved children, Kylie and Thomas, and her loving steadfast partner Jody who was at her side throughout. She is survived by her parents Jo Ann and Toomas, and her sisters Kate and Jenn, and their beautiful families. Also, she will leave a hole in the hearts of her many cousins, aunts, uncles and dear friends.
In lieu of flowers please donate to the Bruce Trail Conservancy, Grey Bruce Health Services, Colorectal Cancer Canada, or the Grey Bruce Hospice (Chapman House).
